225 Cedar Shake Roof Replacements

One of our major projects was the replacement of 225 cedar shake roofs at a local development Whitpain Farms. The roofs add been installed incorrectly and after 20 years were starting to fail, so the property manager enlisted CD Kaller to replace all of them.

Certi-Label™ is a great choice for the roof of your home. Made from a renewable resource, cedar is strong, durable, and pressure impregnated fire retardant treated cedar shakes and shingles provide fire protection locked into the roofing material.

Shake vs Shingle

The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau defines them like this: "Generally, a shingle is sawn on both sides and is thinner at the butt than a shake. A shake is typically split on one or both sides. There are important exceptions to this, (tapersawn shakes = shakes sawn on both sides) depending on the specific manufacturing method and the dimensions of a specific product. Shakes are still manufactured by hand, but most are now made using powered equipment. Certi-Split® shakes are made by taking the wood straight split from the block, and sawing it end-to-end at an angle. This creates a shake which is sawn on one side and split on the other, often called a “handsplit and resawn” product. Medium shakes are shakes that measure nominal ½” at the butt. Heavy Shakes are shakes that measure nominal ¾” at the butt."

Cedar is a Renewable Resource

Trees are a renewable resource and the use of wood building products is an environmentally sound choice. Wood is also the most energy efficient building material available today. When you compare the total energy costs of different kinds of building materials - including the cost to acquire the raw material, transport it, process it into a useful product and then actually use it - wood far outshines its competitors.

Cedar is Strong

Certi-Label™ suppliers achieve a class 2-3 rating on a simulated hail test (UL-2218 Steel Ball Drop Test where the roofing material resists a 2 inch steel ball dropped from a height of 15-18 feet).

Cedar is Wind Resistant

CSSB member products have met stringent Dade County, Florida requirements. Dade County, Florida, is considered to have the toughest wind resistance regulations in all of North America and roofing products are evaluated using TAS 100-95 Uplift Testing. Water is also added into this test’s windstream to ensure the roof deck is free from leakage.

Cedar is Energy Efficient

Wood is a natural insulator. Thick cedar shakes help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Cedar can be Fire Resistant

CSSB member pressure impregnated fire retardant treated cedar shakes and shingles provide fire protection locked into the roofing material, proven over and over in eight rigorous Underwriters Laboratories (Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada) designed tests
